We zijn ruim twee weken geleden teruggekomen uit Myanmar. Wat een geluk hebben we gehad met het weer als je nu alle berichten ziet over de gigantische overstromingen! Ik heb te doen met al die lieve mensen die we er ontmoet hebben en hoop maar dat het snel voorbij is…
Het grootste voordeel van wonen in het centrum, is dat er zich veel om de hoek. Afgelopen maandag werd er een Nanyin voorstelling gegeven in de tempel waar wij pal op kijken vanuit huis. Nanyin is een oude Chinese, muzikale kunstvorm en het schijnt niet zo vaak te worden vertoond. Nu was het zo dicht bij en open voor publiek, dat ik zelf ben gaan kijken wat het is.
Verdeeld in 8 aktes, werd er op diverse (voor ons veelal onbekende) muziekinstrumenten zachte muziek gemaakt, er werd soms zacht bij gezongen en soms ritmisch en langzaam bij gedanst. Het feit dat het voornamelijk een Aziatische aangelegenheid was en ik, als westerling, een zeldzaamheid was, maakt het extra bijzonder om zoiets mee te maken.
En nu staat een extra lang weekend voor de deur. Singapore viert op zondag 50 jaar onafhankelijkheid. Dat gaat niet ongemerkt voorbij. Al weken wordt er gerepeteerd op de hele dag, het vuurwerk en de luchtshow. Singaporese vlaggen hangen overal. Auto’s rijden rond met rode ballen (red dot) op hun dak en vlaggen aan hun spiegels. Komende zondag worden er om 9 uur ’s morgens alarmbellen geluid, dezelfde als op de begrafenis van Lee Kuan Yew, waarna zijn originele toespraak van 50 jaar geleden wordt uitgezonden op tv. Het is mooi om te zien hoe trots en dankbaar de bevolking is met wat ze bereikt hebben. Dus ik zit klaar met de ‘Celebrate SG50’ app voor alle feestelijkheden!

Around the corner
We are back from Myanmar for over two weeks now. How fortunate have we been with the weather if you see the news this week. It’s flooded! I feel for all the nice people we met and I hope it will be over soon…
The greatest advantage of living in the center, is that a lot is happening just around the corner. Last Monday there was a Nanyin performance in the temple we see from our window. Nanyin is an ancient Chinese music art form and it seems to be a bit rare. Now that it was close to our home and open for public, I’ve been taking a look myself.
Divided into 8 acts, there was softly played on (for us mostly unknown) music instrument while sometimes people were singing softly or dancing rhythmic and slowly. The fact that it was mostly an Asian affair and I, as a westerner, was a rarity, made it even more special to participate in such a thing.
Now an extra long weekend is coming. Singapore is celebrating its 50th year of independence on Sunday. That won’t pass without any notice. For weeks already, they are rehearsing the whole day, the fireworks and the air show. Singaporean flags are everywhere. Cars are driving around with red dots on the roofs and flags at their mirrors. This Sunday, at 9am, the alarm will sound, the same one that sounded at Lee Kuan Yews’ funeral, and his original speech from 50 years ago will be broadcast on television. It’s beautiful to see how proud and grateful the people are with what they have reached by now. So I’m prepared with the ‘Celebrate SG50’ app to find out about all the festivities!
