I think this is already the 3rd time that I write about something that has to do with Mee Siam. This blog is obviously not about the food (I’m in the middle of a series of portraits), but about the people who make it!
‘My cosy corner’ is a small place in Coronation Plaza (Bukit Timah Road). Evelyne likes to go there for her mee siam addiction and now we went together. You must know that I am as well a mee siam addict. Apart from this, they sell a lot more, but we only came for the mee siam and the popiah (which is also an incredibly good dish!).
While people in the kitchen are busy making our Mee Siam, the woman you see on the photos, is making a bunch of popiahs. And when she finished these ones, she immediately started with the next series and so on. Although she hadn’t much time to talk while working, she said that she is working all day and everyday now that her boss is gone for a holiday. Usually they make the popiahs together so one of them has time to take a break and go for lunch. Today, she can only lunch when the restaurant is quiet again.
We were right in time to take the last table in the small restaurant and we were told that we needed to wait at least 20 minutes for the popiah. Even though this lady was rolling popiah continuously, it wasn’t quick enough to meet the demand!
The result was delicious and gone too soon…
Ik denk dat dit al de derde keer is dat ik schrijf over iets dat met Mee Siam te maken heeft. Dit blog gaat natuurlijk niet over het eten (ik schrijf een serie portretten), maar over de mensen die het maken!
‘My cosy corner’ is een kleine eetgelegenheid in Coronation Plaza (Bukit Timah Road). Evelyne gaat hier graag heen voor haar Mee Siam verslaving en nu gingen we samen. Je moet weten at ik ook een Mee Siam verslaafde ben. Naast dit gerecht, verkopen ze nog veel meer, maar we kwamen alleen hiervoor en voor de popiah (dat ook erg lekker is).
Terwijl de mensen in de keuken druk waren om onze mee siam te bereiden, maakt de vrouw die je op de foto’s ziet, een aantal popiahs. Wanneer ze klaar is met deze serie, begint ze meteen met een aantal nieuwe. Steeds opnieuw. Hoewel ze weinig tijd had om te praten tijdens het werk, zei ze dat ze elke dag de hele dag dit werk doet nu haar baas op vakantie is. Normaal gesproken maken ze de popiahs samen en kan één van beiden zo nu en dan een pauze nemen om bijvoorbeeld zelf te lunchen. Vandaag kan deze vrouw pas gaan lunchen als het weer rustig is in het ‘restaurant’.
Wij kwamen net op tijd om aan de laatste vrije tafel te kunnen zitten en er werd ons verteld dat we minimaal 20 minuten zouden moeten wachten op onze popiah. Hoewel deze dame continue popiahs stond te maken, was het niet genoeg om te voldoen aan de vraag.
Het resultaat was trouwens heerlijk en veel te snel op…
